If you plan to travel to Kenya, you may be curious about the kind of weather you will encounter. There are always some nagging questions you may want answered.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?, What is the climate like? Is there any Winter there, How warm or cold will it be?

These are some of the questions I want to help you answer.

The weather and temperatures in Kenya will depend on the time of the year you visit and the regions in Kenya you visit.

Kenya is quite a big country and has many different climate zones, ranging from Hot humid coastal region, to hot and Dry savanna as well as cooler wet highlands.

Rainy seasons

Rainfall comes to Kenya in seasons. The Central highlands, coastal region, eastern plateaus, and the lake basin of Kenya experience two rainy seasons:

The long rains occur from March to June and the short rains occurs between the months of October to December.

The rainy season months are the coldest and are not suitable for travel due to difficulty with transportation. Many roads become muddy and impassable.

The Kisii highlands of western Kenya in have a single rainy season, lasting from March to September.

Highlands

The Central highlands of Kenya, a region including the Capital city Nairobi has a temperate climate and receives an average annual rainfall of 800 mm (32 in) and has average temperatures ranging from 9°C to 29°C (48° to 84°F). Places with higher elevations receive a lot more rainfall.

The Lake Victoria basin in western Kenya is among the wettest region in Kenya, especially the highland regions to the north and south of Kisumu.

The average annual rainfall ranges from 1,740 mm (70 in)

to 1,940 mm (80 in) and average temperatures range from 14° to 34°C (57° to 93°F).

Coastal Region

The coastal region of Kenya is largely wet and humid. The region around Mombasa and Malindi receives an average rainfall of 1,050 mm (41 in) and has average temperatures ranging from 20° to 32°C (68° to 90°F).

Savanna and Deserts

The low plateau savanna lands of Kenya are the driest parts of the country. The northern part of the country receives an average annual rainfall of 320 mm (13 in) with average temperatures between 19° to 37°C (66° to 99°F)
