Malindi lies next to Galana River about 75 miles (120 km) from Mombasa and has a population of about 150,000 people.
The town started as a port and Swahili settlement in the 1400’s. In 1499, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama visited Malindi on his voyage to India. He erected a pillar and a church, both of which exist to date.
Many ancient buildings from the portuguese era still survive, including the Juma Mosque and Malindi palace.
