Know the customs and Etiquette to avoid cultural mishaps

A Proud Kenyan Ferminist Kenya is a relatively liberal country and one does not really need to worry about offending local customs, norms or sensitivities. Most people are very friendly too. This is probably where the famous phrase "Hakuna Matata" (No problem) originated from.

While most people are Christians, there is a considerable population of Muslims living mainly in the coastal towns of Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu.

In most cases, It would be helpful to dress in a decent manner and not wear clothes that are too revealing.

Mosque in Nairobi Most people are very polite and if you say "please" and "thank you" while conversing, this is greatly appreciated.

When making acquaintances, you should greet someone with a handshake. It is always preferable to use your right hand even if you are left handed. You should also not make prolonged eye contact as this can be misconstrued as being disrespectful. A smile always helps build trust.
